Philosophy of Music Education
Music – and vocal performance in particular – is an incredible avenue of self-exploration and creative self-expression. My teaching philosophy is to equip students with the knowledge and passion appreciate music and participate in vocal performance and the related fine arts so that they may learn to express themselves through their voice for the rest of their lives. Music Education provides necessary life skills such as self-discipline, self-expression, responsibility, patience, and teamwork. I want students to be actively listening, participating and engaging through music. Whether they are music majors or not, I want them to understand and appreciate the arts and so that their life may be edified by music. It is my role, as a music educator, to teach, inspire and show the potential for my students. I also want to take gifted students in vocal performance and equip them to maximize their potential for vocal performance and self-expression, and to learn how to be good people through that process.
I believe music is a divine gift to all and every person has the capacity to express themselves with their voice. My motivation in teaching voice is to give back to the public what I have learned and what I continue to learn about music and vocal production.
As a teacher of voice, I endeavour to provide a safe, positive, nurturing and welcoming environment for my students. I want my students to feel enlivened and inspired to learn about music and vocal performance. I want them to reach their personal best. I want them to challenge themselves, as well as the others around them. I want them to always be evolving and aspiring to become better people as well as better musicians through seeking any opportunity available to them to grow. Voice should be taught by certified professionals who have a comprehensive knowledge of their instrument. Teachers should have a wide knowledge of performance practice, history, theory, and should have good communication and organizational skills. An effective voice educator is enthusiastic and passionate about music and working with students of all abilities.
I want to incorporate cooperative learning in my studio. I want my students to be active and engaged in small and large groups that will then translate in the professional setting. I want my students to be able to analyze music styles, apply problem solving to their performance and be able to apply specific music terminology to their work. I want my students to go beyond technique and focus on musicianship. I want them to be active listeners and focus on phrases, melodic melodies and musical style. I DO NOT want my students to sound like robots. I want them to have expression and life in their singing.
Through teaching I look forward to being a blessing and also sharing in the challenges ahead. I am driven to provide the best educational setting for my students. I aspire to be a competent music teacher and an active listener through music and the arts. I anticipate many years ahead of sharing and teaching music with others.

Statement on Diversity and Inclusion
Everyone, no matter the socio-economic status, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, should have an equal opportunity to learn, gain knowledge of and aspire to be the best singer they are able to be. I endeavour to apply this perspective for all of my students. The values of diversity and inclusion are deeply important to me and I have worked hard for the last 4.5 years in Bolivia to counteract the exclusionary prejudices and oppressive social structures that keep indigenous youth – and particularly young women – powerless and in poverty.
